Action- Less Valued than Spirit?

"Action is character."-F. Scott Fitzgerald

I have recently found out that a few of my friends plan not to vote, because they feel that the whole political system is in such a bad way that there is nothing to be done with it. This scares me. A lot. It is this kind of apathy plaguing our generation that causes me to take pause. Why does our generation feel that nothing can be done? Why do we give up our own power? Especially Pagans, who like to think of themselves as powerful- but only in spiritually esoteric ways? Is that the only impact we are willing to endeavor? That way of thinking reminds me of something T. Thorn Coyle said when we were meditating, and everyone in the group automatically closed their eyes- it was something akin to "Learn to do magic with your eyes open. There is much work to do, too much to keep eyes closed."

Maybe the practical aspect of change is missing. Starhawk writes in the Spiral Dance that doing magic for a job and then not going out and looking for a job is not going to get you a job, and I feel that way about the state of our world. The practical is necessary too- I find that the lessons of the Earth element are all about manifesting that which is within us spiritually. The everyday actions that I take are just as important as the spiritual lessons I tackle. So, I am puzzled on this. Does anyone have any thoughts?
